ELIZABETH VS. BILL:
NO LONGER BEWITCHED --
JUST BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED

Modern Screen's Hollywood Yearbook
1973
Liz & Bill Asher
There were rumors of trouble early in the year but no one paid very much attention to them. Liz and Bill were one of the most solidly married couples in Hollywood. Liz had had two divorces behind her - one to a socialite when she was very, very young; another to actor Gig Young and Bill appeared to be the answer to everything she had been looking for in life.

"Bill," she said glowingly, "is the most solid thing in the world. What he says and thinks makes such sense that it's a marriage must for me not to disappoint him by trying to be evasive, cute or temperamental. There's magic in a real marriage. No one wants to be lonely. The only answer is love but we can't take it for granted after we get the true thing at last. For marriage isn't a stunt that saves someone from another catastrophe. It's a gift of joy."

For nine years there was joy in the Asher marriage. The two first met when Bill was assigned to direct Liz in
Bewitched (correction: actually they met when he directed her in Johnny Cool - webmaster). They didn't fall in love immediately but after a stormy beginning they became fascinated with each other and when his unhappy marriage ended in divorce he proposed to Liz. At that time there were no doubts, no hesitation. Even the fact that they were working together all day didn't dim the enjoyment they found with one another. And there certainly was a sense of pure enjoyment in spite of a togetherness unequaled since the last Siamese twins. These two not only loved each other, they liked each other and they liked their routine: working on Bewitched all day; arriving home in time to play with their three children and cuddle them in bed. Then cocktails, supper and bed. On weekends they'd play golf or tennis or party it up.
"We work hard during our shooting days,” Bill said at the time, “to have more free times evenings and weekends. Our private life comes first."

And Elizabeth added, "it is absolutely extraordinary the happiness I have found with Bill. I wish the same happiness for everybody. When your previous marital experiences have been unhappy, they make you appreciate what you have all the more."

     When
Bewitched was canceled last season neither Liz nor Bill had any inkling that that great happiness was about to be canceled either. Maybe it was a break in a six-year routine that made her restless. Who knows? But suddenly Liz was no longer bewitched by what she had, but bothered and bewildered by the fact that she was no longer getting any real satisfaction out of her life style.

Supposedly for a change of pace she left for Honolulu and when Bill didn't accompany her the rumors about these two grew louder. Bill, however, denied there was a real separation.

"We recently leased a house in Honolulu," he said. "I suggested that while I was in New York trying to sell two TV shows, Liz go there. It was silly to let our beautiful place go to waste. I asked her to go to Hawaii and have some fun there with the children while I was away."

According to reports, however, she was having fun there and not only with her children. The gossip mongers pointed out that in Honolulu, Liz saw a great deal of director Dick Michaels, the man Hollywood is gossiping about as the real reason for the problem in Liz's marriage. Friends say a great personal attraction developed between them at the time. Maybe not. Time will tell. As of this writing Liz and Bill have made no plans for divorce and perhaps the whole thing will blow over. For the sake of young Bill, Bob and Rebecca, one can only hope so.
